Mr. Deeds |
Whenever I watch an Adam Sandler film lately the most interesting part is to look for people that were in his other movies. Mr. Deeds is no exception but does have it's moments. It is a movie that has the underlying theme of what simple values are and what is important in life. The basic plot is that small town Deeds inherits 40 billion dollars from his dead uncle and the corporate guys want it for themselves. Winonna Ryder (Anyone else think she is hotter now that she is a criminal? <crickets chirping> all righty must be just me then) is pretty good as the romantic interest but I think the funniest person is John Tuturro as the butler. His performance was very sneaky...watch the movie to know what I mean. I also liked Steve Buscemi as Crazy Eyes... his characters just crack me up in any movie. It is not the worst Adam Sandler movie ( Little Nicky) but it is by far the best ( The Wedding Singer). |

Brotherhood of the Wolf |

First off I don't usually like foreign films too much when I have to read subtitles (Amelie is a good choice as foreign films go). If I wanted to read a book, I'd read a book. But let's hear it for DVD where I can watch the movie and they speak english. Woo hoo!!!!!! I watched Brotherhood of the Wolf that way and I enjoyed it while there were some lulls and the movie could have been about 30 minutes less. There is some pretty cool fighting and the kung fu scenes were well choreographed. Yes I said kung fu scenes. It is a story of a beast killing women and children in the late 1700's so a taxidermist (I thought this was kinda funny...who else would you send?) is sent to investigate. The plot is kind of confusing as it starts involving religion, sex and romance (no ladies they are not the same thing), politics and a pretty interesting mystery of the beast. The beast is kind of lame looking when it is CG but no worse than Scooby Doo. The last 30 minutes I thought was the most confusing but I would still classify this as a good rent. |

The Ring |

I believed all the hype and the success at the box office of The Ring, so we went on the suggestion of my sister-in-law while we all were in Laughlin(Side note: at the Riverside in Laughlin you can take alcoholic drinks into the theater...they have a bar at the concession stand. The drinks are not that good but hey it's cool.) Any hoo, the basic premise is that there is a tape that you watch and then you get a phone call telling you you have 7 days to live. Naomi Watts(no nudity....just nipplage through a sweater while wet) plays a reporter who tries to find out what is the deal with this tape by of course watching the tape. Oooooooo...scary!!!! Or not it turns out. Anyone who says this is the scariest movie of all time must have only seen the movie Bambi. It had some tense moments and it starts off ok but starts making no sense and ends up a wanna- be psychological thriller. Wanna see something scary don't bother with this one and rent this. That was truly scary. |

Spider-Man |
Ahhh.....finally my favorite super hero comes to the big screen/DVD and I am not saying that to be trendy. I used to watch all the shows on TV including all cartoons and the live action show (which was terrible by the way but what do you expect from a Von Trapp kid as Spiderman?). Spider-man was always the coolest because he was a smart ass and was a regular guy too. This was the best super hero movie to come out in awhile. I only think the original Superman rivals it as far as being faithful to the comic(except of course for the organic web shooters which makes more sense than Peter Parker building them). I loved Willem Dafoe as The Green Goblin because it is hard to be normal and insane at the same time in one scene. If you have not seen this go buy it, you will not be disappointed. By the way I met the stunt double for Spiderman, Mark Wagner. He is the brother of my wife's sister's husband. I mean we are practically blood brothers! I'll take over for him when they need a double for Spiderman after he has let himself go at the all you can eat buffets!!! |

The Sum of All Fears
As most of you know The Sum of All Fears is Ben Affleck's first turn as Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. He does a pretty good job as Jack Ryan but I think Ben suffers from what some critic called "Jack Nicholson Syndrome". Basically that is when Jack Nicholson is playing a role he is always being Jack Nicholson. Such it is with Ben Affleck. He is always being Ben Affleck. I still like him as an actor but my wife has lost all respect for him hanging out with J-Lo. I can't help that Ben loves the booty!!! Anyway, I liked The Sum of All Fears and can see Ben Affleck playing Jack Ryan again. It is suspenseful in parts and there are terrorist attacks so if you are shaken by that maybe you should watch this one at a later date. |

Scooby-Doo

I was not really expecting too much from Scooby Doo but I think it was ok just for nostalgia. I think it is a good one for the kiddies. Matthew Lillard was great as Shaggy but the CG Scooby blew dog(sorry....had to be said). The rest of the cast is just there to act dumb or say "Jinkies". I don't really remember Velma looking that good in sweaters either. But if you are a fan of the Doo crew, this movie is just like the cartoon except for the 1/2 hour plot is stretched for 1.5 hours. I also know that Scooby Doo made $154 million but that does not mean you need to make a sequel. Hellooooo....Warner Brothers.....are you listening??? Apparantly not...click here. |

The Royal Tenenbaums
All I have to say is....huh? The Royal Tenenbaums is quite the odd little flick. A great cast but with really nowhere for them to go except for Gene Hackman as Royal Tenenbaum. He was funny as the uncaring and clueless father. There is some laugh out loud comedy in this film but not much....it is more of "Oh hey that is kinda funny" but you don't actually laugh. It was quite the long two hours but it was like a train wreck. My wife came in about an hour in and said basically "Pass the cyanide please". I did make it farther than my parents though....they turned it off 20 minutes in!!! Wussies!!!! |

Monster's Ball |

Kind of interesting to a point. Actually it makes your life not look that bad at all compared to these unfortunate souls. Plus I am ok with Halle Barry's nakedness but I don't need to see Billy Bob's bare ass. Sexist yes but I even think feminists would agree on that point. My eyes have been permanently scarred.....no wonder Angelina left. It's quite the odd premise with a correctional officer that rethinks his racist life and starts dating an African American woman, who is the widow of the last person he executes. This movie is just a bit too heavy for my tastes....but it does have boobs.....woo hoo!!! |

The Scorpion King |

Glad I did not go see it in the theater but an entertaining rental none the less. Macbeth it ain't but I would probably be pretty bored with Macbeth anyway. I liked The Mummy and parts of The Mummy Returns (I was good until the blimp) and I would put The Scorpion King in the middle those as comparisons. The plot is pretty basic as The Rock has to overthrow some evil tyrant that rules his homeland. Enough said? The action is about as good as the other Mummy Films with swords and killings and some special effect bugs. Kelly Hu is pretty hot jumping around half naked as the Sorceress as well. The Rock comes off as a pretty good action hero and with nobody in site to take over as a bankable action star maybe it is time for Hollywood to smell-lel-lel-lel what the King.....is cookin'!!! |

| Blade 2 |

Vampires are cool for the most part. The only vampires I did not like was the ones in Interview with a Vampire. A bit too real for me. But I really like the Blade movies. I would buy these both on DVD. I have them in my hand all the time but never buy them. I think the original Blade ranks as one of the top 5 best super hero movies. Blade 2 is enjoyable but I did think it was kind of missing something. Also some of the CG effects of Blade fighting were just plain lame. But all in all I like Wesley Snipes as Blade and the special effects are pretty good (and quite gory in some parts) along with most of the fight sequences. Basically a popcorn movie. |

| Van Wilder |

Short review for this one as it does not merit much else. This is the last time I listen to my sister and brother in law.....crack smokers I tell ya. They bought this movie as it was supposed to be the funniest movie ever. P'shaw!!! This does have some funny parts and I think Ryan Reynolds is pretty funny as Van from Two Guys and a Girl but for some reason Tara Reid just irritates me to the core. She would be the perfect woman if she was naked and did not talk. Also I'll never be ordering an eclair again but to make up for it a cameo by Erik Estrada never hurt anyone. |
